Troubleshoot My Home Air Conditioner Compressor - air conditioner compressors are used in four main types: rotary, reciprocating, scroll and variable speed. rotary compressors are often in cabinets or windows and are fairly inexpensive and very durable. piston compressors are used in split air conditioners, in which the unit is divided between external compression units and internal ventilation units. Scroll compressors are common in today of Energy Star air conditioners, and variable-speed compressors are used in air conditioner systems to high-end.
How to Troubleshoot My Home Air Conditioner Compressor
Shut off power to air conditioner unit.
Remove access panel to air conditioner unit. This varies according to air conditioner model, but most access panels are removed by releasing screws or clips holding them in place.
Turn multimeter to volts setting and touch two probes of multimeter to input connections on motor. You should have reading of 0 volts. Otherwise, you still have power to unit.
Look for any damaged wires leading to compressor unit. Check owner's manual for instructions on how to replace wires.
Look for terminal connected to compressor and locate C, R and S connections. Put one of multimeter probes on C and another on R. continuity between two should be less than 30 ohms. Check all connections in this way. If resistance is higher and compressor is hot, wait until it cools to continue troubleshooting. Once unit is cool to touch, test again. Replace unit if ohms are consistently reading over 30.
